Step 2: Grant application
Applicants whose projects receive concept approval from the Executive Committee are invited to submit a proposal. This is a thorough description of the proposed study accompanied by detailed budget information. Only invited proposals will be reviewed. External peer reviewers will evaluate the proposals for scientific merit, with particular attention to significance, approach, and feasibility. After written critiques are received, a summary is sent to the Principal Investigator. For a project meriting continuing consideration, the Principal Investigator is given the opportunity to address reviewers' concerns. Depending on the study's strengths and weaknesses, reviewers may recommend 1) that the Advisory Committee consider the proposal for funding, 2) that the proposal be revised and resubmitted, or 3) that the proposal be rejected.
