  1. What help is available for preparing a grant proposal?

    Research Managers are available by e-mail or telephone to answer questions that may arise while preparing either a concept paper or a full proposal. Back to top

  2. What is the average size and duration of your grants?

    Amounts awarded and time periods vary depending on the specific needs of each proposal. Projects are supported for up to 3 years. Awards from the Fund have ranged from a few thousand dollars to approximately $400,000. The Fund’s median award is $230,000, with most between $150,000-$300,000.

    Early Career Awards are limited to a maximum of $25,000 in direct costs, plus up to 7% indirect costs. Early Career Awards are made for a maximum of 2 years. Back to top

  3. How many grants do you award each year?

    The Fund is not limited on the number of projects funded each year. However, as a matter of practice, the Fund has approved 20-30 applications per year for the past several years.

    In addition to the regular grants, the Fund will support up to 30 Early Career Awards each year. Back to top

  4. What are the application deadlines?

    There are no deadlines for the regular awards. Concept papers are reviewed and processed on a rolling basis. Funding decisions for full proposals that have completed the review process are made three times a year, in February, June, and October.

  5. How long will it take to go through the review process?

    The Fund makes every attempt to move projects through the review process as expeditiously as possible. Many factors can increase or decrease the amount of time for review. It typically takes four to six months to complete the review process and receive a final decision on the completed application.

  6. Do you have application forms?

    Concept papers follow a specific format. If the concept is approved, the Fund sends a formal electronic application form with detailed instructions for the applicant.

  7. How many copies of my proposal should I send?

    Concept papers are sent by email. Full proposals are also sent by email. The first two pages of the full proposal with original signatures should also be sent by mail. Back to top

  8. How can I receive updates on the status of my application?

    The status of an application can be ascertained from the Research Manager assigned to your project. Back to top

  9. Can I apply for a renewal?

    Projects cannot be renewed; however, a no-cost extension may be granted by the research manager for projects that need to go beyond the originally anticipated end date. Grantees may reapply for follow-up work on a competitive basis. Back to top

  10. Can I apply for supplemental funding?

    Supplemental grants are rarely funded. Grantees may reapply for follow-up work on a competitive basis. Back to top

  11. If I have one Thrasher grant, can I apply for a different Thrasher grant?

    You may apply for multiple grants from the Thrasher Research Fund, however the proposals must be for distinct projects.

    A mentor may have only one Thrasher Research Fund New Researcher grantee at a time. Back to top

  12. Can you share a copy of a successful proposal?

  13. Do you give grants to for-profit organizations?

    The Fund is not prohibited from providing grants to researchers from for-profit organizations, although this is rare. Back to top

  14. Does Thrasher allow resubmissions?

    The Fund does not allow the resubmission of either a concept paper or a full proposal once a final decision has been reached on a project. A PI may submit a new idea as a new concept paper. Back to top
